Your Thoughts on Waterproof Mascara?

February 15th, 2019 by Karen 22 Comments

To tie the entire eye look together, I thickened my upper and lower lashes with three layers of Covergirl Fall Lash Bloom by Lashblast Mascara in Black.
What say you about waterproof?

It’s so handy, right? — especially when you know you’re going to sweat, or it’s pouring down rain outside and you don’t want your mascara running down your face?

But I’m starting to have mixed feelings about it…

Oh! I used to LOVE waterproof mascara, especially for the curl hold. When you have stick-straight lashes and you need something to really lock that curl down, waterproof is the best. It really is, but for years I’ve been hearing people say that it’s not a good idea to use waterproof all the time because it’ll make your lashes fall out… I always thought that was an old wives’ tale, but I think it might be true to a degree. When I was exclusively using waterproof mascara, like all the time, I saw a lot of lashes breaking and falling out, and every lash is so precious to me now that I don’t use waterproof mascara as much anymore.

Now I look at it like this: If my mascara is gonna smudge, it’s gonna smudge. So be it.

Man, I wish there was an “almost” waterproof mascara that didn’t require any special removers — just warm or cold water or an oil-based makeup remover. I just wanna be able to wash my face without having to “get all the gear” and make a big deal about it. Is that too much to ask?

Anywho…what are your thoughts on waterproof mascara? Do you use it? Do you not use it? If not, why? Have you also heard that it’ll make your lashes fall out if you use it too much? Tell me your deepest thoughts about waterproof mascara. 😊

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Teenage (Valentine) Dreams: Keanu Reeves

February 14th, 2019 by Karen 16 Comments

So…I have a thing for Keanu Reeves.

I would say that I’ve been mildly obsessed with him for quite some time, and I still entertain the possibility that Keanu and I will be married someday (don’t tell El Hub!).

I’ve believed this since roughly 1993.

HA HA HA!

But, yeah.

Despite the fact that, technically, I’m married, with a cat and a toddler, I still believe that people will address me someday as “Mrs. Keanu Reeves.”

Of course, El Hub just rolls his eyes when I talk about this, but I can also say that if El Hub had to duel with Keanu (or Viggo Mortensen) for my hand in marriage, El Hub would be OK about losing to Keanu. He would be all, “Well…at least it was Keanu.”

keanu
Just call me Mrs. Reeves…

I’ve been thinking a lot about him lately (Keanu), because he has a new movie out that I want to see called Replicas.

It’s supposed to be pretty bad, though…

Wait — Keanu Reeves is in a bad movie?! HA HA HA! Yeah, he’s been in a few stinkers, but people still hella love him, myself included.

I’ve been Googling him and reminiscing… One, he’s very easy on the eyes, even with a beard, and I’m not into beards at all (too scratchy), but Keanu with a beard? I could live with that.

Also, he’s supposedly an avid reader (we could talk about books!), generous and very polite, which, you know, is probably a combination of good PR, the truth, Hollywood mythology and a pinch of Internet rumor, but Google’s cup runneth over with stories about .

Also again, I like how “Keanu and Karen” sounds. Cute, right? 😊

Ravenous for Red Lipstick: BECCA Hot Tamale

February 14th, 2019 by Karen 10 Comments

Hey, hot stuff!

Valentine’s Day 💖 is here, so this is a purr-fect time to celebrate that most sanguine of seductresses — scarlet! The Ravenous for Red Lipstick series features the crimsons I’m currently cuckoo for.

Happy Valentine’s Day, babe! I hope that you and Ryan Gosling are having a lovely celebration of your eternal commitment to each other.

Ya know, I’ve been told I have a spicy 🌶️ personality, but when it comes to hot and spicy food, my heat 🔥 tolerance level is negative 10. The spice must flow…but not into my food, thanks.

I do love a a hot red lipstick, though, like BECCA Hot Tamale! It’s the same color as a ghost pepper (or, in my case, a sweet red bell pepper).

BECCA Hot Tamale

Just so you know, this lipstick does not taste like a hot tamale.

  • Who would like it? Anyone who can work reds with orange undertones and own that ish like they invented it, OK?
  • What’s it similar to? MAC Lady Danger, but with a semi-matte finish instead of a matte one — so, more like a MAC Amplified lipstick finish (I’d call them sorority sisters).
  • What else should you know? It’s $24 and available at the usual BECCA haunts, including Ulta and Sephora. It has a 4-hour wear time, too, and moves me to song (specifically D’Angelo) because it tastes and smells like brown sugar, babe.

I gets high off your love, I don’t know how to behave.

Are you doing anything for Valentine’s Day, by the way? I’ve got a cold (SURPRISE), so we’re gonna do a family Valentine’s Day with take-out tonight.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ravenous for Red Lipstick: Behold BECCA Brave!

February 13th, 2019 by Karen 10 Comments

becca brave swatch
BECCA Ultimate Lipstick Love in Brave ($24)

Valentine’s Day 💖 is right around the corner, so this is a purr-fect time to celebrate that most sanguine of seductresses — scarlet! The Ravenous for Red Lipstick series features the crimsons I’m currently cuckoo for.

OK, so…I think the eight-hour wear time claim is a stretch for the lipsticks in BECCA’s gnarly new Lipstick Love line, but dang! — for the four hours lasts on my 💋 lips, I have absolutely NO complaints.

If you’re into pigment packed red lippies, this one’s for you, assuming you’re cool with brown sugar, because that’s how these taste and smell (but it’s not all up in your grill).

Expect some tugging when you run these across your lips because they have a moderately thick formula, and even though I don’t always like when lipsticks feel thick and heavy, I don’t mind this formula. It’s juuust shy of too thick, so it’s firmly in the lip product Goldilocks zone.

According to Sephora…

What it is: An eight-hour long-wearing, silky-satin lip color infused with the next generation of hyaluronic acid.

Ingredient Callouts: Free of parabens. This product is also cruelty-free.

What Else You Need to Know: This silky-satin lip color wears for up to eight hours, and is infused with next-generation hyaluronic acid to hydrate and smooth the look of lips. Ultra-creamy, pure pigments and light-reflecting oils deliver high-impact color in a single swipe. Infused with avocado oil, the ultra-comfortable formula nourishes lips.

Again, I haven’t been getting a full eight hours from these, but I still like ’em.

becca brave
Feeling Brave!

I think the formula’s heftiness (?) is also a good thing, particularly in cool red Brave’s case, because the formula isn’t super slick, so applying it is almost like drawing with a lip crayon. I can scribble those corner lip lines into place without having to do any major cleanup with a pencil liner, concealer or anything else.

I actually freehand applied the red lips in this pic.

Yup, no brush! — which is doubly impressive considering that I drank too much coffee and had the shakes when I applied it.

Oahu, Hawaii 2019 Vacation in Review: Things I Did, Places I Ate and Where I Stayed

February 12th, 2019 by Karen 20 Comments

Things I did, places I ate, and places I shopped on Oahu.

The Go-Go’s said it best… Vacation, all I ever wanted.

You guys, I miss Hawaii! Even though this trip wasn’t ideal (more on that in a sec), we still had fun, and I’m missin’ it as I sit here at my desk under three layers of clothes as I slowly turn into a human Popsicle.

Here’s what I did, where I stayed and what I ate.

But first…

1. The Kaiser Permanente Waipio Medical Office

On the second day of the trip, Connor came down with what seemed to be a cold, but it quickly got worse, so we went to the doctor and spent a long time with the pediatric staff at the .

A nebulizer treatment and a chest X-ray later, and it turned out that Connor had pneumonia! Shout-out to Dr. Marumoto, Nurse Shawna and the whole staff at Kaiser for their care and kindness, and for trying to make a fish-bubble nebulizer mask fun for the Coywolf.

It’s really scary to have a sick kid while you’re traveling, and if it happens, FYI, you’ll probably be on the phone. A lot. So don’t forget your cell phone cable and charger. I had to call the insurance office first to figure out our coverage in Hawaii, and they assigned us a temporary patient number. Then I had to arrange a call to speak to an advice nurse and get a last-minute appointment at the closest clinic.

I’m glad we rented a car, which we almost didn’t do for this trip, because the clinic where we got our appointment wasn’t close to the resort. Overall, pretty scary and nerve-wracking.

2.

My parents have a timeshare at Ko Olina on the western side of Oahu near . The resort has a few pools, a secluded beach, a spa, restaurants, workout rooms and beautiful views of the ocean and a marina. They also have a packed calendar of activities for families, kids and adults.

After Connor was feeling better, our favorite activity was feeding the fish.

Kickin’ it with some koi

The Bronte Sisters

One great thing about the rooms is that many of them have a kitchen, a washer and a dryer. (Side note: You know you’re hella old when you go on vacation and one of your favorite things about the hotel is having a washer and dryer in your room.)

I like the western side of Oahu because it’s not as rainy as other parts of the island, and you’re more or less guaranteed sunshine. Only thing is…it’s REALLY far out there. Ko Olina, which is also right next to , is at least an hour drive from most of the major tourist attractions on Oahu, like the North Shore, Honolulu, Hanauma Bay and Waikiki Beach (it’s a little closer to Pearl Harbor), so if you’re a first-time visitor, you’ll probably spend lots of time stuck in traffic. And the traffic is bad.

Of course, you could just stay at the resort…

Calgon, take me away!

Especially on Oahu, I recommend renting a car and planning to go places around the commute time traffic. In the case of Ko Olina, without a car, it’s easy to feel cut off. We rented a minivan this time, and even though we stayed close to the resort for most of the trip, it sure was convenient for getting groceries, sightseeing and running errands.

Things I particularly loved about the resort on this trip:

  • The Aquasize class at 10:30: This hour-long class is held in a big shallow pool, and it’s super fun! You jump in, put on a pair of these weird gloves that look like frog hands, and do resistance exercises to choreography as a teacher demonstrates the moves from the edge of the pool on dry land. The tunes are upbeat, too, and the time flies, so it doesn’t even feel like exercise!
  • Shave Ice Hut (next to the pool with the slide): I went three times! Their snow is about a 7 on the fineness scale (I just made that up), and they have got a good selection of local shave ice flavors like passion fruit (a.k.a. lilikoi), guava and pineapple.
  • The Starbucks in the hotel general store: The 2% latte is one of the smoothest I’ve ever slammed.
  • The koi pond: Ah… Connor and I spent SO MUCH TIME feeding the fish here. It was in the shade, and she loved it. Yes, of course we named all of the animals. If you visit, say hi to the Bronte sisters and King James for me (he’s the biggest orange koi; you can’t miss him).
There’s a tai chi class here in the morning.

3. Hawaii Kai

We also spent a few days on the other side of the island where El Hub’s parents live. It’s all the way on the opposite end of the island from Ko Olina in a quaint town called Hawaii Kai, which is also one of the places El Hub lived with his family when he was a kid, and he has many wonderful memories of the area, like the time 10-year-old El Hub found himself surrounded by a school of barracuda in a flood canal with nothing more than his little pink bucket to defend himself! LOL.

4. Places we ate

At Ko Olina, we mostly ate in the room because it had a kitchen, and because we had an unexpected bounty of food, because on our first day there, I started chatting with someone in the elevator who just happened to be leaving, and she gave us all the extra food her family got from Costco but couldn’t finish.

I did manage to also try some new places, though!

  • This one’s up on the North Shore, and there are several shrimp places up there (Giovanni’s, Fumi’s, etc.). But this is the best one IMHO, because the shrimp isn’t dripping in oil, and even the simple boiled shrimp is incredibly flavorful. I ordered one pound of boiled shrimp and was in frickin’ heaven.
  • This bakery is in “town,” a.k.a. Honolulu, in the old neighborhood of Kaimuki. They bake fresh malasadas, which are fluffy Portuguese doughnut holes dipped in sugar that melt in your mouth; cakes, cookies, and they make their own ice cream, too.
  • Foodland is a grocery store chain in Hawaii, and if you head to the seafood section, you’ll always see a long line of locals waiting to order poke, which is a dish of diced raw fish with other accouterments like seaweed, green onion and soy sauce, served either as an appetizer or a main course. Foodland is famous for it, and it’s fresh and delicious. They have several different varieties, and if you have no idea what to order, take a cue from the locals and get what they’re getting. I ordered a quarter pound of the (ahi with algae) and loved it.
  • This casual seafood place is also known for their poke. You can also order rice plates with two scoops of rice and a main dish, or you can do what I did, which was order individual poke and a side.

The strawberry cake bomb at Pipeline.

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick.
